12-yr-old boy become hero after rescuing toddler in daring act
A two and half year old toddler who had fallen into a 60-feet deep gorge of the Seti river in Pokhara has been rescued by a 12-year-old boy after an anxious 22 hours Wednesday.
The toddler -Aradhana Pradhan - was rescued by Kamal Nepali, 12, after a team of professional rescuers all but gave up having failed to bring the child back up even after repeated attempts.
The little girl who is the only child of John Pradhan, a local pastor, and his wife Esther, accidentally fell into the deep gorge at 2:30 pm Tuesday afternoon after having attended a funeral with her family.
Teams of locals, police and army personnel and professional rescuers from Nepal Canoeing Association in Kathmandu had immediately attempted to rescue the girl after she fell inside the ravine.
But even after 22 hours of repeated attempts, the rescuers weren't able to bring the child back up. As the gorge was very narrow, the rescue teams were having great trouble in entering it to the depth where they thought they would have any chance to save the child.
Locals and relatives of the toddler were sure that the girl was alive after they heard her crying and calling out to her father for help, but as it was very dark inside the gorge they weren't able to see where exactly she had fallen. They along with the rescue team had camped near the site all night long, praying for the safety of the child.
But all of them started fearing the worst after the child fell quiet after 8 am Wednesday morning.
Then out of the blue Kamal, a first grader at a local government school, arrived at the scene. His elder brother Salum had told him that only a very small and thin person could manage to get through the very narrow gorge to save the girl.
"A small girl like our own little sister is trapped in the gorge, would you like to go down to rescue her?" Salum had asked Kamal. Immediately after that Kamal had readied himself to go into the gorge.
The officials at the local administration office had at first advised the boy against taking the risk, fearing for his safety. But Salum urged his brother to proceed.
Entering the gorge with nylon wires strapped around his body, Kamal rescued the toddler in just half an hour.
Kantipur Daily reported that it had taken Kamal some 20 minutes to reach the place where Aradhana was stuck. He had crawled on all his fours to negotiate through the extremely narrow gorge.
The anxious crowd worried about the safety of two children erupted into jubilation when they saw, much to their joy and surprise, Kamal slowly coming up with the help of a rope, cuddling the little girl inside the bag. The little girl looked exhausted, as she hadn't had anything to eat for more than 24 hours. But albeit for a small scar on the forehead, she didn't have any serious injuries.
Delighted by his heroic act, Kamal was then hoisted up and cheered by the jubilant people.
Aradhana was immediately rushed to Manipal Teaching Hospital by ambulance. She was admitted to Intensive Care Unite at first. But later doctors involved in her treatment said that she didn't have any serious internal or external injuries and her condition was normal.
